What is Sixth Grade Drama?

Drama is part of the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Creative Arts Wheel, which also includes Health, Industrial Art, and Music. Each exploratory class runs for a period of nine weeks. These courses give students the opportunity to explore a variety of subjects in the areas of fine and applied arts.

Course Overview

Even if your child does not plan on becoming an actor, the skills your child will learn in this course will help him or her in all aspects of life, including other courses in school.
Throughout this quarter, your child will learn about theatre history and basic stage concepts. We will work on using our voice and facial expressions to be more expressive in various situations.

Because this course deals with performance, we will discuss what it means to be a good audience member and how to give and receive constructive criticism. Knowing that no one is perfect and that we all can improve in any situation is a skill that we will focus on this quarter through repetitive practice and classroom critiques.

Through fun class activities such as pantomime, vocal warm-ups, and storytelling, we will work on becoming a more engaging speaker in front of any type of audience.

Classroom Expectations

This course is a very “hands on” course. Every day in class we will be doing some type of activity to encourage and develop performance skills. As a result, active participation in the course is key. Students must make every attempt to be enthusiastically involved in the activities we do and to be willing to put forth effort into performances.
Because students work from different comfort levels of speaking in front of an audience, respect and good audience etiquette is essential and no disrespect will be tolerated.

Most course work will be done in-class, however, students will have some homework assignments. Generally, homework assignments will consist of asking students to practice a skill being learned in class. I will often ask students to practice in front of an audience at home. Knowing that practice is essential to improvement, I encourage you to watch your child’s performances and to give him or her positive comments as well as constructive criticism.

Grading Policy

Grades will be based on class participation, completion of assignments, classroom performances, occasional quizzes, and growth as a performer.

I understand that not every individual is a “natural performer.” Grading of performances will be evaluated on completion of requirements, effort, and growth, not talent.

All assignments must be done on time. Any missed performances due to absence must be made up in a timely fashion.

Classroom Rules

I do not have many rules, and failure to adhere to these rules will result in consequences per school policy.

  1. Be in class on time.
  2. Always bring Drama folder and agenda book to class.
  3. Be a Class Act Student at all times.
  4. No form of disrespect will be tolerated.
  5. Participate actively and enthusiastically in all activities.
  6. Maintain excellent audience etiquette during all performances.
  7. No gum or candy allowed in the room.

Classroom News

Occasionally I will post information about what's going on in the classroom here.
For now in class, we are working on pantomimes. Students are encouraged to practice their pantomimes at home on a regular basis. After pantomimes, students will work on a group project bringing a children's story to life on the stage. more information to follow.
